The strumming hand is often overlooked by guitar players. It is the voice of your instrument and you. I see lots of bad habits developed when beginning that can take lots of hard work and practice to fix.
Not strumming or picking the strings properly can create some unpleasant sounds coming from the guitar (sometimes this is good in a musical context but let it be by choice not by default)

Strumming from the elbow

Burying the pic into the strings

Strum using the wrist
Hold the pic at a right angle to your thumb
Skim over the strings with the pic
Keep your moments as small as possible
